The Stairway In The Sky
When you’re standing in the shadows
And you can’t help but wonder why
Point your trouble toward
The stairway in the sky.
When you can’t find the words
To tell me how you feel
And all your hopes are turning to fears
Smile in knowing someone is here.
Now the stairs are getting taller
And you know it’s not much further
And your journey will be done
Remember, your spirit will carry on.
You may see the rising of the dawn
And tell yourself
There’s just no moving on.
When your eyes are filled with worry
You feel lost and surely
You may find it hard to believe
When I say you’ll be okay.
There’s someone who understands
He always listens and never asks why
Just point your troubles toward
The stairway in the sky.

For Mr. Goldie (one of many beloved patients)- who was the first to ever call me his "hero of the day"- after the loss of his wife, Mary, of over sixty years at Mt. Washington Care Center. This was originally written on a napkin which stayed pinned to Mr. Goldie's corkboard until his death.
