I Am Not Me Without You

I am not me without you
Because you’re not afraid to understand me
And me you

I've lived most my life
Only revealing qualities of myself
I believed others would appreciate
But it doesn't matter to you
Because you’re my friend
You take me as I am
Beautifully imperfect

I don’t care if we don’t touch
If you don’t say you care
I don’t have to hear your voice for proof
I see you that you're there

You can handle my ups and downs
My mood swings, sad dreams
And even in my darkest hours
You still have the power
To make me laugh or smile

You’re always there for me
You never make me feel alone
Or forgotten
Because in some ways we are connected
Mirror souls whose images touched and clung
Pieces traded, shared, forged anew

I have a bond with you
That time and space cannot divide
And even in those lonely days
I feel close to you
I think of you at the start of each new day
And just the thought of you brings a smile to my face

When I write a poem or story
I can’t wait to share it with you
When I read something interesting
I can’t wait to tell you
Cause I know you’d love to learn it too

I can’t stand when those who don’t know you
Try to judge you
They call you crazy, violent, a time bomb ticking

While I see in you so much strength and beauty
A man who had never been a boy
Self raised child sleeping in a box in the woods
And needing love and care to emerge from the pain

There had to have been some divine hand
Guiding our path
So that I'd amazingly
Fall right into your lap
And you instinctively tighten your grasp

A lifetime of loss left you wounded
And I know you're afraid to let me in
So until you can confront the turmoil
I'm happy to call myself your friend.
