If I Love You
If I pretend I’m not in love with you
Would you still me my friend?
And in my saddest hours
It’s in your voice and arms I’ll descend
If I walk a little funny
And speak a foreign tongue
Will you see through the madness
And know that I’m your true love?
If I call you in the middle of the night
Leave you fifteen messages
And at the very end I say
“You’re not just my friend
I think I’m in love with you”
Would you call me and say you've felt the same?
What if you and I were to really hit it off
And I wanted to shower you with gifts but I was out of a job
And out of that emotion I came out and said
“If I couldn’t afford a diamond ring
Would you still marry me?”
What would you say?
Maybe we'd rent an apartment round the way
And maybe we'd grow closer every single day
Years would pass by quickly
And maybe I’d neglect you
And forget how much I’d loved you from the start
And brake my own heart and soul in betraying you
My best friend
And in those sad dark hours
I’d ask you to forgive
And give my solemn oath
That I’d walk a little funny
For I’d carry you in my arms
And I’d speak a foreign tongue
Of sweet love charms
And make you fall in love with me anew
Would you have the kindness to pull me from my madness
And forever be my best friend?
If I bought a little diamond ring for you
Would you grow old with me?
Even though it’s not my style
I’ll don a suit and meet you at the end of the chapel aisle
And I’d say my vows by rote though I’ve already given you my oath
To always protect you
Love you,
Honor you
Never again betray or neglect you
I’d be the greatest friend God could have made for you
A partner in life and love you can be proud of
And count on
From day to night, year to year and so on and so on
Until the end of time
I will hold you in my arms and my heart
So that we will be as one.
