Could Have Been There 

 

 

I wish you could have been there 
To see us grow strong
For two stupid kids to merge as one
And to watch as we fell in love

I wish you could have been there
For all the times we almost failed
And been there to rejoice with us
When we prevailed

I wish you could have been there 
Dressed up as never before
Amanda in a dress
Jake in a suit and tie (and steel toed boots, we compromised)
You’d have laughed or cried

I wish you could have been there 
To hear us say our vows 
And hear the love and certainty in our voices
And know that we’d found true and lasting love
When we found each other all those years ago

I wish you were here now
To share all our special days
And all the joys and sorrows 
You've missed along the way

But most of all I wish we could have been there
To watch you grow and change
To see you evolve from crazy kid to man
I wish we’d gotten to mend a stronger fence 
Watch you fall in love, get married and raise some kids

I wish we could have been there before you took that faithful drive
Someone should have begged you not to get inside
And maybe the kid behind wheel made it out fine
But you didn't make it out alive
And I wish we could have been there.
